Want to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS and use it on any carrier? Does Apple store selling unlocked iPhones? Nope. But that’s likely to be changed starting this Wednesday. Rumor has it that Apple stores will start selling unlocked iPhone 4 on Wednesday. Is it really worth getting the iPhone unlocked right out of box? It’s not uncommon to buy unlocked phones and use it as a prepaid in Europe and Asia. Buying an unlocked CDMA iPhone 4 can only mean that you will be using it on Verizon Wireless. An unlocked GSM iPhone will most likely to be used on AT&T’s network. For those die-hard fans of T-Mobile you probably have an unlocked iPhone already. For $199 you can get the iPhone 4 with a 2-year contract from AT&T or Verizon Wireless. You would have to pay $600 to $800 for 16GB iPhone 4 unlocked. You might ask – what for? Sure you will have the flexibility of switching carriers anytime you want and don’t have to pay for the required data features (I believe every smartphone should have data feature to make it smart). Sure you will end up saving a bit with a prepaid plan but will it be enough to cover the $600 over the course of 2-year contract?
